Make an impact the world can see

Why work for us?

Do work that makes you feel good.

If you want to make a difference and leave your mark on the world, then you’ll love working for The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Each day you’ll be doing work that makes you feel good, and job satisfaction will take on a whole new meaning as you come to realise that you’re an important and valued part of a diverse team that’s actually changing lives and uplifting communities.

At The Fred Hollows Foundation, our workplace culture is shaped by our values. Our values include integrity, collaboration, empowerment, and action. The way our entire organisation engages and interacts is based on these four tenets.

Our workplace culture informs everything we do, and our culture is just as important as our vision. It isn’t just about what we achieve, but how we achieve it.

We want to achieve equity in eye health and our work is centered around ending avoidable blindness in the world. At the heart of it, we restore sight to some of the world’s most vulnerable people in marginalised communities, not just in Australia, but around the world. In order to do this, we rely on our team of talented individuals, who bring a wealth of ideas, experience, and knowledge. Our team members offer new ways of thinking and innovative ways of getting results.

If you are someone who values transparency, open and honest communication, an organisation-wide commitment to a clear goal, and want your voice to be heard, then you belong with us.

How we value your contribution

We want The Foundation to be a place where our people truly enjoy coming to work.

Through our internal programs and employee benefits we aim to create an environment where our people will feel supported and empowered.  Whether your focus is on continuous learning, professional development or simply finding an environment which enables you to thrive whilst balancing family or personal life commitments, then we have several programs in place to support you.

Benefits are designed based on global principles and local market conditions. The benefits specific to a given role are outlined in the Role Purpose document.

Global Benefits

Our global remuneration framework ensures that we align to local pay, employment conditions and laws. All our roles are benchmarked against the local market to ensure we offer competitive employment conditions that are appropriate to our sector. Depending on where the role is based, we also offer additional financial benefits which can be seen in the Role Purpose documents for each role.

We offer our staff at least 14 weeks’ primary carers leave without any qualifying period. We also offer at least 4 weeks’ secondary carers leave without any qualifying period. We value the importance of supporting all types of parents in the workplace.

We have a spirit of mutual flexibility and encourage discussions between our people and their managers focused on outcomes not hours! We want you to work in a way that best suits your needs and have embraced technology solutions that help you personalise your working day, working from any device, anywhere. This will enable true work/life balance.

Our performance review process promotes and encourages continuous conversations. This will allow you to work closely with your manager to plan, manage, and review your performance continuously throughout the year. At any time of the year, we encourage you to pick up the phone, book a meeting or simply arrange a tea/coffee. We know that regular catch-ups are best!

Along with continuous on-the-job training and coaching, we provide all employees the opportunity to access our in-house learning platform, with over 6000 courses. We are confident there is something for everyone!

Our leadership program has been designed to support both experienced and aspiring leaders, enabling us to build our current and future leaders.

Our global study assistance program provides both financial assistance and study leave support to any employee who is looking to add additional qualifications to their toolkit.

We recognise and acknowledge our people who live our values. Our annual “LOVE” award gives our staff the opportunity to nominate their colleagues for the significant contribution they have made.  It’s also a great excuse for a celebration!

We are committed to supporting your health and well-being at work and our Wellness Wednesday initiative is a great opportunity to learn new ways of taking care of yourself at work, as well as providing an opportunity for you to catch up with your colleagues and have a bit of fun!

To support health and wellbeing, we offer free external, professional and confidential counselling assistance to our people and direct members of their families who face personal, family or employment related concerns.

"The beauty of a patient's smile because they can see a loved one again is unique. It is just a pure expression of love. This scene energises me every time. It gives meaning to the work I do every day, and makes me love what I do."

Our recruitment process

We appreciate the time and effort everyone takes to apply for a job with The Foundation, that’s why we are committed to ensuring your candidate experience is memorable. We understand that applying for a job comes with a lot of excitement and a lot of unknowns. We want to be transparent about our recruitment and interviewing practices, so you feel confident and prepared. Here is what to expect during the recruitment process:

Before applying to one of our positions, we encourage you to do your research and to read the relevant role purpose. This will enable you to assess whether your skills and experience are a match for what we are looking for.  If our position looks like a great match for you, then tell us!  We really love to read a good letter of application that tells us a bit more about you, and do not forget to attach your resume too.

One of our Talent Acquisition specialists may get in touch for a chat about the role, find out more about your experience, and answer any questions you may have.

There is no need to feel nervous about this part, its really just a “get to know you session” and it really helps us match you for roles now and in the future.

If you are short-listed, we will ask you to attend an interview, either in person or via video conference (we use Microsoft Teams).  Our interview panels usually consist of 2-3 people and are a great opportunity for you to meet with some of your potential colleagues.

We know that interviews can be daunting, but believe us we are equally as nervous, as we know you need to like us too.

Depending on the role, you may have two or more interviews. Typically, our interviews include a combination of competency-based and technical questions. This way, we can understand how you like to work and see your experience against our selection criteria.

For roles that have a focus on working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples or programs, we will have at least one Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person on the panel.

For some roles, you may be asked to undertake a further assessment. Most can be completed online, and they help us understand your work preferences, skills, and ability. For roles that involve external presentations or pitches, we may ask you to prepare a short presentation based on a particular scenario or case study.

You will always hear back from us!

We try and ensure that we communicate in a timely manner with everyone who has invested time in applying for a position with us. We make a point of acknowledging all applications and ensuring everyone knows the outcome of their application, whether successful or not.

Like the people we serve, we know everyone is different. We do not want our people to blend in, in fact we want them to stand out. We recognise that innovative thinking comes from having a diverse work force, so if you are good at what you do and want to make an impact then come as you are.

Criminal record

A person’s criminal history does not automatically exclude them from working or volunteering with us, but any criminal convictions must be disclosed when you apply. All applicants will be required to undertake a criminal records check.

Working with children check

As an organisation committed to safeguarding children, youth and vulnerable people, all successful applicants for positions which have contact with children will be screened for their suitability.

World-Check One

As an organisation focused on safeguarding our people, reputation and funds, all successful candidates will be have risk screening conducted World-Check One (WC1).

The reason we collect this information is so we can run a risk screening in World-Check One (WC1) prior to agreements being signed.

This check is a key safeguarding process aimed at protecting The Foundations people, reputation, and funds.

This means all third parties engaged by The Foundation including implementing partners, corporate donors/partners, suppliers, individuals, contractors, sub-contractors, consultants etc. must undergo a World-Check One (WC1).

Please note that WC1 risk screening does not include police/background checks.
